Summer Dhamma Courses on the Fundamentals of Buddhism

Beginning in 1979, Sayadaw U Silananda carried out Sāsana duties in the San Francisco Bay Area by delivering Dhamma talks, teaching Dhamma courses, and conducting meditation retreats, as time and energy permitted. However, he was unable to conduct formal classes on the Fundamentals of Buddhism specifically for children and youth.

Dr. Lyn Swe Aye and Dr. Khin Nyo Thet were concerned that young Myanmar Buddhists might become unfamiliar with the teachings of the Buddha. They therefore requested Sayadaw U Silananda to conduct a course on the Fundamentals of Buddhism for children and youth and generously donated the seed money for the course and its awards.

The inaugural class was held in 1991 with four students. In 1996, Dhammananda Vihara relocated to Half Moon Bay, after which student enrollment increased. In 2006, the renovation of Dhammananda Vihara was completed, allowing students to stay overnight at the monastery without commuting. That year, enrollment reached 50 students. In 2007, it grew to 80 students, and attendance continued to increase annually, peaking in 2010 with 210 students. In 2025, due to space limitations, enrollment was capped at 195 students.

Initially, A Manual of Buddhism by Bhikkhu Nārada (Ceylon / Sri Lanka) was prescribed as the main text. Later, as younger children who could not yet write joined the program, a Primary Class was introduced. In this class, students learned Okāsa, selected prayers, and a brief history of the life of the Buddha.

To accommodate students of varying ages and knowledge levels, multiple classes were offered: Basic 1, 2, and 3, as well as Advanced 1, 2, and 3. For the Basic classes, The Basic Teachings of Theravāda Buddhism by Sayadaw U Jotalankara was used as the prescribed text. For the Advanced classes, selected chapters from the following books were taught: Abhidhamma in Daily Life (translated by Sayagyi U Ko Lay), Buddhism in a Nutshell by Bhikkhu Nārada, What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula, and What Buddhists Believe by K. Sri Dhammananda.

Since the inception of the Summer Dhamma Classes in 1991, there have been only two years when the classes could not be conducted (for example, due to COVID restrictions), resulting in a total of 33 fruitful years. TBSA, Dhammananda Vihara, and their supporters will continue this noble tradition—to pass on the Dhamma and cultural heritage to young Myanmar Buddhists and to promote and propagate the teachings of the Buddha.

နွေရာသီ အခြေခံဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာသင်တန်း

            ဆရာတော်ကြီး ဦးသီလာနန္ဒာဘိဝံသသည် ၁၉၇၉ ခုနှစ်၊ အမေရိကန်ပြည်ထောင်စုသို့ သာသနာပြု ရောက်ရှိလာချိန်မှ စ၍ တရားဟောခြင်း၊ တရားပြခြင်း၊ ဓမ္မသင်တန်းများပေးခြင်း စသည် တို့ကို မနေမနား ကြိုးစား၍ ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့၏။ သို့သော် ကလေးများအတွက် အခြေခံဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာ သင်တန်းများ ကိုကား မပြုလုပ်နိုင်ခဲ့သေးပေ။

            ဒေါက်တာလင်းဆွေအေးနှင့် ဒေါ်တာ ခင်ညိုသက်တို့ကလည်း ထိုမြန်မာနွယ်ဖွားကလေးများ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာနှင့် ဝေးသွားမည်ကို စိုးရိမ်မိ၏။ သို့အတွက်ကြောင့် ထိုကလေးများအတွက် အခြေခံ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာသင်တန်းလေး တစ်ခုခု ပြုလုပ်ရန် ဆရာတော် ဦးသီလာနန္ဒကို လျှောက်ထားကြ၏။ ဆရာတော်ကလည်း နဂိုကပင် လုပ်ဖို့ စိတ်ကူးရှိသဖြင့် ဝမ်းသာအားရ လက်ခံလိုက်၏။ ထိုသင်တန်း အတွက် မ,တည်အလှူငွေကိုလည်း သူတို့ဇနီးမောင်နှံကပင် လှူဒါန်းခဲ့၏။

            ပထမဦးဆုံး အခြေခံဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာသင်တန်းကို ၁၉၉၁-ခုနှစ်တွင် ကျောင်းသား ၄ ယောက်ဖြင့် စတင် ဖွင့်လှစ်ခဲ့၏။ ၁၉၉၆ ခုနှစ် ဟပ်မွန်းဗေးသို့ ကျောင်းကြီးပြောင်းရွှေ့ပြီး နောက်ပိုင်းတွင် ကျောင်းသားများ ပိုမိုရောက်လာကြ၏။

            ၂၀၀၆ ခုနှစ်တွင် ကျောင်းသစ်ကြီးလည်း ဆောက်လုပ်ပြီးသဖြင့် ညအိပ်ကျောင်းသားများ စတင် လက်ခံခဲ့၏။ ထိုနှစ်တွင် ကျောင်းသား ၅၀ တက်ရောက်၏။ ၂၀၀၇ ခုနှစ်တွင် ကျောင်းသား ၈၀ အထိ တိုးလာ၏။ ဤသို့ဖြင့် ကျောင်းသားများ တဖြည်းဖြည်း တိုးလာရာ ၂၀၁၉ ခုနှစ်တွင် ကျောင်းသား ၂၁၀ အထိ အများဆုံး တိုးလာခဲ့၏။ ယခု ၂၀၂၅ ခုနှစ်တွင်ကား နေရာအခက်အခဲကြောင့် ကျောင်းသား ၁၉၅-ယောက်သာ လက်ခံခဲ့၏။      

သင်ကြားပေးသည့် စာအုပ်များမှာ ပထမပိုင်းတွင် သီဟိုဠ်ဆရာတော် ဘိက္ခုနာရဒရေးသည့် Manual of Buddhism ကို ပြဒါန်းခဲ့၏။ နောက်ပိုင်းတွင် စာမရေးနိုင်သေးသည့် ကလေးငယ်လေးများ လည်း ပါလာ၍ ဩကာသတန်း(Primary)ကို ထပ်တိုးခဲ့၏။ သူတို့အတန်းတွင် ဘုရားရှိခိုးစာများနှင့် ဗုဒ္ဓဝင်အကျဉ်းချုပ်ကို သင်ကြားပေး၏။

နောက်ပိုင်းတွင် ကျောင်းသားများလာသဖြင့် Basic 1,2,3 and Advanced 1,2,3 ဟူ၍ အတန်းများ ထပ်တိုးခဲ့၏။ Basic 1,2,3 အတွက် ဆရာတော် ဦးဇောတာလင်္ကာရ ရေးသည့် The Basic Teachings of Theravada Buddhism စာအုပ်ကို အပိုင်း ၃-ပိုင်းခွဲကာ သင်ကြားပေးခဲ့၏။

Advanced 1,2,3 အတန်းများအတွက် ဆရာကြီး ဦးကိုလေး ဘာသာပြန်သည့် Abhidhamma in Daily Life, ဘိက္ခုနာရဒရေးသည့် Buddhism in A Nutshell, ဆရာတော် ဝါပိုလာ ရာဟုလာရေးသည့် What the Buddha Taught, ကေသီရိ ဓမ္မာနန္ဒရေးသည့် What Buddhists Believe စာအုပ်များမှ သင့်တော်ရာ အခန်းများကို ကောက်နှုတ် သင်ကြားပေး၏။

            ဤနွေရာသီ အခြေခံဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာသင်တန်းကြီး စတင်သည့် ၁၉၉၁ ခုနှစ်မှ စ၍ ယခုနှစ်အထိ ကြားတွင် ၂ ကြိမ် ပျက်ကွက်ခဲ့ဖူး၏။ ၎င်း ပျက်ကွက်သည့် ၂ နှစ်ကို နှုတ်လျှင် ၃၃ ကြိမ်မြောက်အထိ ခရီးပေါက်ခဲ့ပြီဖြစ်၏။ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ရင်သွေးများအတွက် ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာအမွေ လက်ဆင့်ကမ်းသည့် အနေအားဖြင့် လည်းကောင်း၊ သာသနာတော်ကြီး ဆက်လက် တည်တံ့စေရန်အလို့ငှာ လည်းကောင်း ရှေ့သို့လည်း ဆက်လက် ချီတက်နေဦးမည်သာ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။
